Before summer tails to an end, there are a few treats that you cannot miss if you have not already tried them. Not that these treats wouldn't be exhilarating enough with a piece of autumn pie though!
For a long time, my all-time favourite ice cream flavour has been chocolate but Salted Caramel Cluster by So Delicious, with its new range of cashew ice cream, has quite literally tilted my preference. Last summer I tried the coconut range of ice cream but this time, the cashew creams have come a long way. They beat every ice cream I have ever had, both dairy (during my pre-vegan days) and non-dairy. If it took me a couple of months to finish these tubs that I got in three different flavours, it is merely because I have tried to control my portions so as not to trigger my nut allergy symptoms. Yet once again I am totally in love with So Delicious' frozen treats, not forgetting the Cocowhip creams that I also enjoyed.
I find it hard to believe that I actually traded my all-time favourite chocolate flavour for the sweet and salty lushness of Salted Caramel Cluster. Filled with chunky pieces of cashews shelled in an indulgent coating of chocolate, all blended up with swirls of caramel sauce, the taste along with the texture are really exquisite. While I do have my reservations on salted caramel in general, this one had just the right amount of salt to turn it into an addictive treat. Helping myself to only a small serving was the hardest thing!
While the salted caramel flavour did win me over, the Dark Chocolate Truffle was not far behind. Smooth and intense, this one, I believe, has been conceived to satisfy those ghastly chocolate cravings. However, I was personally expecting more of the truffle experience but it seemed that it was camouflaged into the base a little too much. Even though this one was not as creamy as other flavours in the cashew range, with thin slivers of rich decadent chocolate generously thrown into the mix, it delivers quite a satisfying scoop of chocolate ice cream.
As humble as the Creamy Cashew appears to be, it is so much more than what the name suggests. With an intricate hint of vanilla interwoven with a pinch of salt that is barely noticeable, this one is sure to please any vanilla ice cream lover. As a kid, I almost never went for vanilla ice cream as I found it too plain. But now, it seems that vanilla really evokes a lot for me than it actually did before. Whether it could be because I've been away for so long from Mauritius where I used to savour the best vanilla tea or it is because my palate and preferences have changed over the years, I can't tell for sure. But vanilla sure is one timeless aroma which, when paired with cashew milk, is reminiscence of traditional vanilla ice cream with a pleasurable taste that lingers in the mouth for a little while.
Apart from the ice creams, I also tried the CocoWhip, coconut whipped cream that is available in a full fat and low fat version. I did not notice any difference in taste nor texture between the two or perhaps an ever so slight lightness for the low fat one. While I am not a big fan of whipped cream, I did like these accompanied with fruits or cake. They melt pretty quickly, meaning you couldn't use it to frost a cake that is going to stay out of the fridge for a little while. But I do like the convenience that they present. And since they are coconut-based and not cashews, I could help myself to a more generous portion. Blended with frozen bananas, they made one of the most delactable 'nana-nice' cream I've ever made. I have no photo for this one alas, but I am sure it is not hard for you to guess the result of this combo.
So Delicious hasn't failed to amaze me once again. From the new line of flavoured coconut milk that was introduced last Fall to their wide range of frozen treats, they have been my number one preference for frozen desserts. My favourite at the moment are these Minis Coconut Sandwiches. Have you tried those? For a while now, I almost always have a So Delicious treat in the freezer.
What about you? Do you have a favourite vegan ice cream or one that you've tried recently?
Disclaimer: I was sent three tubs of Cashew Milk Ice Cream and 2 tubs of CocoWhip for a review but opinions shared in this post are my own and I was not remunerated in any other way for this review.
Thanks for the reviews and thoughts on these. I love the chocolate soy (I think) ice cream they make, which is almost the only one we can get around here. There is one other, a vanilla, but it is not GMO free, so I won't buy it. (The chocolate one is, I'm glad to say).
ReplyDeleteHi Ellie, thanks for sharing your feedback. Sorry for my late reply. I actually went and buy the chocolate soy ice cream, I had not tried any of their soy ice creams yet. So, I was curious when you mentioned it. I quite like it too and it comes in a good large tub. :) Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteDo you know where I could find these in Montreal? They look so good!
ReplyDeleteLoblaws carry some and I buy mine in Marché TAU in Brossard. There might be other health stores that carry them too.
